Rep. Brent Marks 53rd Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Reaffirms Commitment to Reproductive Freedom

COLUMBUS – State Rep. Juanita O. Brent (D-Cleveland) today commemorates the 53rd anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision.

“The fight for reproductive freedom is inseparable from the fight for Black maternal health,” said Rep. Brent. “On this 53rd anniversary, I recommit myself to defending the will of Ohio voters and advancing policies that support healthy pregnancies, safe births, and real choices for every family. Restricting access to abortion and comprehensive reproductive healthcare only deepens those disparities and puts more lives at risk.”

In November 2023, Ohio voters approved a constitutional amendment guaranteeing the right to make and carry out one’s own reproductive decisions, including decisions about abortion, contraception, fertility treatment, and miscarriage care.

Since voters made their choice, Ohio Republicans have repeatedly tried to claw back the will of the people at the ballot box-changing the rules after the fact, weakening voter-approved reforms, and using legislative maneuvers to delay or override outcomes they didn’t like. Instead of respecting clear election results, they’ve pursued tactics designed to make it harder for citizens to have a meaningful voice, undermining the very democratic process they claim to defend.
