House Democrats Unveil Bipartisan Efforts to End School Takeover Model, Help Resolve Youngstown Teacher's Strike
COLUMBUS— State Reps. Lauren McNally (D-Youngstown) and Juanita Brent (D-Cleveland) today joined Youngstown City School District teachers on the picket line at Youngstown Rayen Early College High School. While showing their support for the Youngstown Education Association union members, the representatives unveiled legislation that will repeal anything related to the outdated and invalid precedent of the Academic Distress Commission (ADC) in Ohio law established by House Bill (HB) 70 of the 131st General Assembly.
“We are done with having even a sliver of a doubt about the status of ADCs in Ohio. We are done with wondering when the big bad state government will come back and hurt our kids and teachers again,” said Rep. McNally. “We are done, and we deserve to wash our hands of this horrible experiment and chapter in Youngstown City Schools.”
“Dismantling Ohio’s Academic Distress Commission must happen to stop the oppression of East Cleveland and Youngstown school districts from the state of Ohio. The harmful action of the ADC silences the voice of school board members, teachers, and community leaders with no proof of academic success for our scholars,” said Rep. Brent.
Youngstown City School District teachers have been on strike for 10 days now fighting for improved negotiations to secure a contract that upholds their dedication to their profession and their commitment to the future of Youngstown's children.
