Brent, Ray Hold Press Conference on Pet Friendly Rental Act
COLUMBUS— State Rep. Juanita Brent (D-Cleveland) and Asst. Majority Whip Sharon Ray (R-Wadsworth) today held a press conference on the Pet Friendly Rental Act, House Bill 277.
The Act will provide a tax credit for landlords who allow companion animals to reside in their rental units.
“This legislation is in response to the growing and complex housing crisis throughout our state,” said Rep. Ray. “Every day, Ohio pet owners are being forced to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender their beloved family members because of the lack of pet-friendly housing options, especially affordable options.”
“With the exponential rise of residential renting vs. owning, it is vital Ohioans have access to keeping their pets,” Rep. Brent said. “The Pet Friendly Rental Act is a commonsense bill that makes sure anyone with a companion animal can find a home.”
The credit will be $750 per unit and up to a maximum credit of $7,500 per taxpayer. In turn, the landlord is will not be permitted to restrict pets by breed or size, nor impose nonrefundable fees or additional rent related to the pet. Landlords will still have the freedom to have pet free units.
The Pet Friendly Rental Act awaits a House committee assignment.
