Rep. Miller applauds unanimous passage of SB26 creating tax deduction for teachers
State Rep. Joe Miller (D-Amherst) today announced the unanimous approval of Senate Bill (SB) 26 in the Ohio House, legislation that creates a $250 tax credit for teachers paying out-of-pocket to purchase classroom supplies and equipment.
The credit covers costs in excess of the existing $250 federal deduction, which is already factored into a teacher’s state tax liability.
“It’s refreshing to see the Ohio General Assembly come together to support teachers in our state,” said Rep. Miller. “As a former teacher, I understand the significant costs teachers face as we work to ensure all students have the materials they need to learn and grow. While there’s still much work to be done, this is a step in the right direction.”
Among other amendments included in SB 26, the bill also includes a provision to eliminate state sales tax on feminine hygiene products. Earlier this year, Rep. Miller co-sponsored House Bill (HB) 19, a stand-alone bill with the same effect.
“Eliminating the ‘pink tax’ is fundamental to creating equity in Ohio,” added Rep. Miller. “I’m proud to be part of the Democratic caucus that has been leading on this issue for years. It’s a textbook example of how to create positive change through persistent, thoughtful action.”
SB 26 will now be sent to the Ohio Senate for a concurrence vote.
