COLUMBUS - State Rep. Joe Miller (D-Amherst) Monday announced the Controlling Board’s release of $2,354,702.91 in capital appropriations for improvements to the Lorain Correctional Institution.

“This is an older facility that has been highlighted in the media in recent months for its declining conditions," said Rep. Miller. “Whether it's the inmates housed within or the correctional faculty working there, the health and wellbeing of all in the facility is important. The improvement efforts funded by this release will ensure the Lorain Correctional Institution has a safer and healthier environment.”

The Lorain Correctional Institution opened in 1990. It houses approximately 1,400 incarcerated individuals as of January 2026.  The improvements listed in the project, but are not limited to, include the following:

  • Removal of existing flooring;
  • Patch, repair, and prepare the subflooring for the installation of new flooring systems; and
  • Installation of new flooring systems and finishing of surrounding areas.
