Schmidt Introduces Legislation to Build Goshen's Fire House
COLUMBUS- State Rep. Jean Schmidt (R- Loveland) recently introduced House Bill 244, which will rebuild the fire department building located in Goshen, Ohio.
The bill comes as a result of a tornado that went through Goshen in July of last year and destroyed the township’s fire department. Representative Schmidt and Senator Johnson attempted to secure funding in the recently passed state operating budget, but that funding was not included.
“I am disappointed that this funding was not included in the operating budget,” said Schmidt. “These funds are not to simply upgrade or expand the building, but to rebuild what has been lost due to a natural disaster. I call on Governor DeWine to not only support this legislation, but to continue to work to ensure Goshen gets the funding that it needs. I hope my colleagues will support me in moving this bill along quickly so Goshen can get back on its feet.”
Schmidt has additionally engaged with the Ohio EMA regarding the potential eligibility of Goshen for emergency funds.
“My office has spoken with the OEMA and we’ve been told that they are in the process of figuring out how much Goshen may qualify for," said Schmidt. “Whether through the emergency funds, or this legislation, we will continue to work to ensure that the Goshen fire department gets the funds it needs as quickly as possible.”
The bill will allocate $2.5 million to Goshen to rebuild the fire department building. The department is currently working out of a trailer home.
