A new bill introduced in Ohio would temporarily freeze property taxes at 2022 levels.

State Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-Loveland) introduced the legislation, House Bill 402, in an effort to combat rising property taxes.

Schmidt said the bill would temporarily freeze property taxes at 2022 levels to give the Joint Committee on Property Tax Reform time to find long-term solutions to the property tax issues throughout Ohio.

"I am committed to ensuring Ohioans are able to remain and age in their homes," Schmidt said in a statement "This legislation aims to alleviate the inflated tax burdens that our citizens are facing."

The Joint Committee on Property Tax Review and Reform works to review Ohio's property tax system and make recommendations regarding property tax to the General Assembly. It was established under the state's main operating budget passed last year.

Schmidt said House Bill 402 currently awaits a House committee assignment.
