COLUMBUS—The House State and Local Government committee yesterday began hearings on House Bill 61, which would designate “James A. Garfield Day” in honor of the 20th President of the United States, announced State Representative Jamie Callender (R-Concord).

The bill would officially make November 19th, President Garfield’s Birthday, “James A. Garfield Day.”

“President Garfield embodied our values as a nation and as Ohioans” said Callender. “During his long career, President Garfield prioritized helping others and his efforts continue to have a lasting impact on the lives of those living not only in North East Ohio but across the nation.”

Mentor, Ohio is home to President Garfield’s house. Inside the President’s home is his Presidential Library, which was the first of its kind and includes writings from the President about his life and career as a minster, attorney, army officer, and political leader.

House Bill 61 will continue to receive hearings in the House State and Local Government committee.
