Hoops Introduces Purple Heart Memorial Plate Act
COLUMBUS – State Reps. Jim Hoops (R-Napoleon) recently introduced the Purple Heart Memorial Plate Act, legislation to allow the spouses of Purple Heart recipients to retain their Purple Heart license plates after the veteran’s passing.
Under this legislation, the plate will be non-transferrable and may only be retained by the surviving spouse. Additionally, the surviving spouse will continue to pay Ohio’s annual registration renewal fee, and the plate will become invalid upon remarriage.
“For many surviving spouses, this plate serves as a symbol of their loved ones’ sacrifice and legacy,” said Hoops. “This is a meaningful way to honor the valor and tenacity of our Purple Heart recipients and their families.”
If passed, Ohio will become the sixth state to allow surviving spouses to retain this plate, following the lead of Louisiana, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, and Washington.
The legislation awaits a bill number and House committee assignment.
