COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State Highway Patrol has a new major in its ranks.

Former District 1 Cmdr. John C. Altman was promoted Tuesday. Maj. Altman will now serve as commander in the Office of Training, Recruitment and Diversity.

State Rep. Haraz Ghanbari, a member of the House Transportation and Public Safety Committee, attended the promotional ceremony, commending Altman and the OSHP on their efforts to keep drivers safe.

"My son and I were proud to join John's family and friends to celebrate his promotion at the academy," Ghanbari said. "His selection to the rank of major is a testament to his professionalism and dedication to the law enforcement profession, and furthermore his commitment to serving the citizens of our great state."

Altman joined the agency in April 1998 from the 131st academy class, serving at posts in Ravenna, Ashtabula, Hiram, Canfield and Toledo over the years.

He most recently oversaw OSHP operations in 12 counties and seven posts.
