Reps. White, Miller Testify to Designate March 9th as 6888th Battalion Day
COLUMBUS – State Reps. Erika White (D- Springfield Township) and Melanie Miller (R-Ashland) last Wednesday delivered sponsor testimony before the Ohio House Veterans and Military Committee on the bipartisan House Bill (HB) 204 which would designate March 9th as 6888th Battalion Day. The bill aims to recognize the women of the 6888th Battalion, commonly known as the “Six Triple Eight,” who worked swiftly to sort through millions of pieces of mail during World War II and their strong connection to Ohio through their commanding officer, Major Charity Adams Earley. The completion of this mission ignited hope among soldiers during the conflict and carved an enduring legacy in military history.
“This significant chapter of World War II history is often overlooked, reflecting a broader tendency to forget the contributions of women in wartime roles. It is vital to pay tribute to these service women who played a crucial role in maintaining a connection between soldiers and their families back home,” said Rep. White during sponsor testimony.
Rep. Miller echoed the sentiments provided by Rep. White.
The bill received bipartisan support with co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle.
HB 204 awaits further hearing in the House Veterans and Military Committee.
