Rep. Jarrells Champions Civic Engagement at the 2024 Ohio AKA Day at the Capitol

COLUMBUS- State Rep. Dontavius L. Jarrells (D- Columbus) addressed members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® during the 2024 Ohio AKA Day at the Capitol on May 30, 2024, at the Ohio Statehouse. The event, themed "Soaring Greater Through Civic Engagement," brought together over 100 members under the leadership of Great Lakes Regional Director Gwendolyn L. Kirtley and Ohio Connection and Social Action State Coordinator Kaydian Comer. The gathering aimed to enhance members' advocacy skills and mobilize them for meaningful social change. 

Rep. Jarrells highlighted the importance of active civic participation in advancing social justice and equity. He commended the sorority's commitment to social advocacy and encouraged members to continue their efforts in driving positive change.

The event coincided with a historic special legislative session of the Ohio General Assembly, called by the governor for the first time in 20 years, underscoring the significance of continued advocacy and vigilance in addressing pressing social issues. State Senator Hearcel F. Craig (D-Columbus) also spoke, reinforcing the critical role of civic engagement in driving legislative and social progress.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® has been at the forefront of social justice since 1908, empowering communities and advocating for the rights and well-being of all people. Through initiatives like the Advocate for Social Justice, the sorority equips its members with the resources to activate their voices and effect positive change.
