COLUMBUS – State Representatives Darnell T. Brewer (D-Cleveland) and Jennifer Gross (R-West Chester) today introduced bipartisan legislation that would exempt firearm safety devices from sales and use tax. The purpose of this bill is to prevent firearm related injuries and deaths by encouraging Ohioans to properly store and secure their guns. This legislation has received support from advocacy groups on both ends of the ideological spectrum for gun safety, such as the Buckeye Firearms Association and Moms Demand Action.

“Responsible gun ownership starts with safety. By eliminating the sales tax on gun safes, locks, and other safety devices, we are making it easier for Ohio residents to secure their firearms and protect their families. We hope this measure promotes responsible storage, reduces accidental shootings, and safeguards our communities—something that both gun owners and non-gun owners can support. I am proud to stand with my Republican colleague, Rep. Gross in introducing this bipartisan legislation,” said Rep. Brewer. "When it comes to saving lives, there’s no place for politics—only solutions."

“This legislation directly uplifts our Second Amendment rights by providing financial relief to Ohio gun owners while simultaneously promoting responsible gun ownership,” said Rep. Gross.

Safely storing firearms can reduce gun injuries and deaths and is supported by researchers, healthcare professionals, and gun owners alike. Safe storage practices are especially vital when a household member or gun owner is at increased risk for suicide or harm to others. Safe gun storage saves lives.

This legislation now awaits assignment to an Ohio House committee.
