COLUMBUS – State Representative Daniel Troy (D-Willowick) today recognizes World Elder Abuse Day, calling on all Ohioans to recognize and report elder abuse.

“During my last term, I introduced legislation that increased penalties for failure to report elder abuse, and it passed thanks to my colleagues in the last General Assembly,” said Representative Troy. “There is still so much more that we need to do to protect them from the growing cottage industry of despicable scammers and schemers trying to separate our seniors from their hard-earned retirement income and savings.”

Previously, an individual who knowingly fails to report the abuse, neglect, or exploitation of a senior citizen may be fined up to $500. However, as brought to Representative Troy’s attention by the Lake County prosecutor's office, the law provides no guidance or direction for collecting any imposed fines. Representative Troy’s signed and passed legislation improved mandatory reporting laws by eliminating confusion and elevating the punishment for failing to report elder abuse to a misdemeanor of the fourth degree, thereby bringing it in line with penalties for failing to report child abuse.

Representative Troy also sits on the Ohio Elder Abuse Commission and has recently introduced House Bill 173, which designates May as “Older Ohioans Month” in Ohio.

“I believe that every senior citizen deserves to retire with dignity. The mark of enlightened societies throughout the history of our world are those that honor their elders with the thanks and respect that they deserve,” said Representative Troy.

According to a University of Miami study, 1 in 5 Ohioans will be over the age of 65 by the year 2030. Almost every Ohio county is expected to see an increase in the share of population of that age group. Baby boomers now make up the largest generation of older adults in US history.

Anyone can report elder abuse by calling 1-855-OHIO-APS (1-855-644-6277) or visiting https://aps.jfs.ohio.gov. Callers do not need to provide proof and can choose to remain anonymous.

To report suspected abuse in a nursing home or assisted living facility, contact the Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman – which is housed at Ohio Department of Aging – by calling 1-800-282-1206 or visiting https://aging.ohio.gov/care-and-living/get-help/get-an-advocate.
