Representative Troy Appointed to the Joint Committee on Property Tax Review and Reform
COLUMBUS – State Representative Daniel P. Troy (D-Willowick) announced this week that he has been appointed to the Joint Committee on Property Tax Review and Reform by House Speaker Jason Stephens (R-Kitts Hill).
“I'm honored to be recognized for my commitment to better understanding and reform of our property tax system, and I’m excited to work with my fellow committee members on proposing property tax relief while ensuring that essential government services are still provided," said Rep. Troy.
The committee is composed of five members from the Ohio House of Representatives and five members from the Ohio Senate. In each chamber, three of the five members are from the majority party and two members represent the minority party. The committee is required to submit a report to the General Assembly by December 31, 2024 with recommendations on reforms to property tax law. Committee members are not compensated.
“This is really a two-pronged approach to getting much-needed property tax relief,” stated Rep. Troy. “First, we all need to engage in a comprehensive educational process to better understand the complexities of Ohio’s property tax system and laws. Second, we must then decide which components of this system need to be modernized and reformed to make the system not only more understandable to the citizens but also to make it fairer and less burdensome, especially to those property owners on limited incomes.”
The joint committee was formed from Section 757.60 in the State of Ohio’s Budget Bill (House Bill 33), using the exact language that Representative Troy authored.
Rep. Troy is also the Ranking Member of the Ohio House Ways and Means Committee, which deliberates on legislation concerning taxation. Considered an expert on issues relating to budgeting and taxation, Rep. Troy brings decades of experience in government. He is in his ninth term in the Ohio House, served five terms (20 years) as Lake County Commissioner, and was elected by his peers in all 88 counties to serve as President of the County Commissioners Association of Ohio in 2008 and again in 2018. He has also served as a Willowick City Councilmember and Council President.
