Rep. Troy Announces $85K to District for Road Salt Management
COLUMBUS - State Rep. Daniel P. Troy (D-Willowick) today announced $85,723 in funding from H2Ohio Chloride Reduction Grants has been awarded to the Villages of Mayfield and Timberlake to upgrade equipment or salt storage facilities. Mayfield Village will receive $75,000—the maximum amount eligible under this grant. The Village of Timberlake will receive $10,723.
“I am pleased to announce this funding to not only assist area motorists in safely navigating our roads during the harsh winter months, but also reduce the contamination of our local streams and Lake Erie from that sodium chloride runoff,” said Rep. Troy. “I have been very supportive of H2Ohio, and I am pleased that Mayfield Village and the Village of Timberlake are receiving this grant money to achieve those objectives.”
Recipients can use the money to upgrade equipment and salt storage facilities. Mayfield Village will use their awarded $75,000 for upgrading a salt dome roof. The project will cost in total $99,000. Replacing the salt dome roof will impact 100% of the salt storage structure. The new roof will help continue deicing operations, while also improving water quality of shared public resources such as nearby Chagrin River and Lake Erie. The salt storage structure keeps toxic levels of road salt out of surrounding watersheds.
The Village of Timberlake received $10,723 for equipment upgrades. A salt spreader and GPS controls will be paid for from this grant, which will impact 100% of Timberlake’s fleet. Calibration control systems will be implemented as a result of this upgraded salt spreader. Currently, road salt is applied using an analog control system. The new system will be more efficient.
Rep. Troy serves as the ranking member of the Finance Subcommittee on Agriculture, Development, and Natural Resources Committee, which hears and approves all of the funding components for the H2Ohio program. Rep. Troy strongly advocated for continued funding of H2Ohio in last year’s operating budget to restore and protect Ohio’s natural water resources.
