Rep. Lett Calls President Trump's Mass VA Layoffs Disgraceful Attack on Veterans
COLUMBUS – State Rep. Crystal Lett (D-Columbus) today condemned the Trump administration’s plan to lay off more than 80,000 employees (after already laying off over 1,400 probationary employees) at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). These layoffs, part of a broader workforce reduction, disproportionately impact veterans who have dedicated themselves to public service after their military careers.
“This is a disgraceful attack on the very people who have served and sacrificed for this country. The VA employs 6,500 Ohioans, many of whom served our country. As an advocate for disability rights, the VA is a longtime employer of disabled veterans. This decision is not about efficiency—it’s about stripping resources from those who have earned them,” said Rep. Lett.
According to an internal memo from the VA, the Trump administration’s DOGE initiative, led by billionaire Elon Musk, plans to execute massive employment cuts. The slashing of tens of thousands of VA employees is occurring despite last year being their highest service year ever, having over 9 million enrollees and delivering more than 127.5 million health care appointments, according to the agency’s figures.
