COLUMBUS – Ohio House Speaker Bob Cupp (R-Lima) today appointed State Representative Cindy Abrams (R-Harrison) as a member to the Law Enforcement Training Funding Study Commission.

The commission was established to study and recommend possible long-term methods for continuing professional training programs of peace officers and troopers with state funding support to law enforcement agencies. The commission will work from now until March 1, 2022 to submit a report to the Governor, the General Assembly, the Attorney General and the Legislative Service Commission with their findings and recommendations.

“As a legislator and former Cincinnati police officer, the safety and well-being of our communities is one of my top priorities,” said Abrams. “Continuing professional training for our law enforcement is important to keeping not only our citizens safe, but the brave men and women who serve our state safe as well.”

Abrams fought for the commission to be included as an amendment to the state’s two-year operating budget that was passed in June of this year. She also fought for the appropriation of $15 million for the law enforcement reimbursement training pilot program for the year 2022, which covers 50% of the cost of continuing education.

The commission will consist of 12 appointed members who serve for the duration of the commission, three of which will be members of the Ohio House of Representatives. So far, State Rep. Tracy Richardson (R-Marysville) has been appointed to the commission alongside Abrams.

“I’m excited and honored that Speaker Cupp has appointed me as a member of this commission, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to create a long-term plan for the safety of our state,” said Abrams.
