Trump's Chaotic Federal Funding Attack Only First Step in Plan to Rip-off Ohioans
COLUMBUS — Minority Leader Allison Russo (D-Upper Arlington) today released the following statement concerning President Trump’s retreat from his unlawful attempt to halt federal grants, loans, and other financial assistance programs:
“The confusion and chaos you saw this week is just the beginning. Trump’s billionaire advisors don’t care about the average person and have urged the president to slash trillions from the federal budget with zero regard for the impact it will have on our state resources or critical programs for our communities and families,” said Leader Russo. “When Republicans slash federal funding for housing, healthcare, and support for farmers, it’s not just government spending they’re cutting—it’s your ability to afford rent, see a doctor, and buy groceries. They are trying to rip you off and prevent your tax dollars from coming back to Ohio. The voice of the people is the only way to stop them, so if you want to help children, families, and elderly Ohioans in need, call your state and federal representatives and demand that they reject any unnecessary future attempts to cut vital funding for services.”
This action would have had a tremendous impact on Ohio’s state and nonprofit programs that some of Ohio’s most vulnerable people depend on including services to children & the elderly, Headstart, Meals on Wheels, school meals, housing, and utility bill assistance. Hundreds of programs impacting every corner of Ohio and the nation were covered by this intentionally confusing order.
Though this attempt was reversed after public pressure, Republicans are focused on massive federal spending cuts that will gut critical programs and services that everyday Ohioans rely on. These cuts aren’t just numbers on a balance sheet—they’re real, tangible blows to working families, seniors, and children across our state.
