COLUMBUS - House Minority Leader Allison Russo (D-Upper Arlington) today announced that the Controlling Board has approved the release of more than $800K in capital funds for structural modifications to the Jesse Owens South Rec. Center at The Ohio State University.

“Maintaining the safety and integrity of Ohio State’s recreation centers is vital for maintaining the health and wellness of our students,” said Leader Russo. “These capital improvements are not only a long-term investment in our community but an investment in Ohio’s future leaders.”

Originally constructed in 1976, the Jesse Owens South Rec. Center received its last renovation in 1996. The building houses basketball courts, weightlifting and cardiovascular equipment, and aerobics classes, serving between 2,000 and 2,500 students daily. $881,313 in capital funds will be used to modify the structural wood arches which are 15 years past their expected lifespan.

Other approved items include:

  • An increase of $350K for the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services to continue development of the Ohio Family and Children First program which supports local councils as they serve families and children with multi-system needs.
  • $252K for the Department of Health to provide at-home sample collections and laboratory testing for infectious diseases including syphilis, HIV, and Hepatitis C.
