Roemer's CPA Exams Legislation Passes Ohio House

Bill Roemer News

State Representative Bill Roemer (R-Richfield) announces that House Bill 442 passed out of the Ohio House. The legislation makes changes to allow students in Ohio to complete the Certified Public Accountancy (CPA) after 120 semester hours of the required 150 hours of coursework. Roemer spoke to the bill on the House floor.

“The importance within this legislation lies in its permissive nature, giving students the flexibility to test when they are ready, just like 37 other states across the country,” said Roemer. “No longer will Ohio students have to send their scores as far away as Alaska to pursue their dreams.”

Under the bill, among the 120 semester hours they must complete to take the exam, this will include 30 hours of specified accounting classes and 24 hours of non-accounting business classes. Additionally, it will eliminate the existing penalty of requiring another year of experience for Ohio residents who start taking the exam earlier than current law allows.

Roemer joined State Rep. Thomas West (D-Canton) as a joint sponsor on this bill. The legislation passed with a bipartisan, unanimous vote and now awaits further consideration in the Senate.
