Trump's Chaotic Federal Funding Attack Only First Step in Plan to Rip-off Ohioans
COLUMBUS — State Rep. Anita Somani (D-Dublin) today released the following statement concerning President Trump’s retreat from his unlawful attempt to halt federal grants, loans, and other financial assistance programs:
“As a physician, I can attest that this attempt to halt federal grants jeopardized the integrity of federally funded and crucial medical research such as cancer treatment trials and vaccine development. It was also an attack on those who rely on critical government programs such as Medicaid. This is only the beginning. The president tried to skirt the Constitution and go over the heads of Congress in an attempt to undercut the most vulnerable people in our society. Make sure to call your congressional representatives and tell them to reject any further blatantly lawless actions by the administration,” said Rep. Somani.
This decision would have had a tremendous impact on Ohio’s state programs that people depend on including services to children & the elderly, Medicaid, school meals, housing, SNAP & food assistance, and nonprofit work. Hundreds of programs impacting every corner of Ohio and the nation were covered by this intentionally confusing order.
Though this attempt was reversed after public pressure, Republicans are focused on massive federal spending cuts that will gut critical programs and services that everyday Ohioans rely on. These cuts aren’t just numbers on a balance sheet—they’re real, tangible blows to working families, seniors, and children across our state.
