Anita Somani News

COLUMBUS - State Rep. Anita Somani (D-Dublin) today commends Mayor Andrew Ginther of Columbus for signing the recent Ohio Mayor's Alliance’s letter to Governor Mike DeWine calling for solutions to gun violence and youth access to firearms. Mayor Ginther joined a coalition of mayors from Ohio’s 31 largest cities to voice their concerns with the ongoing gun violence epidemic harming Ohio’s citizens.

“Gun violence has been declared a public health crisis by the U.S. Surgeon General. It is imperative that we address this issue through common sense gun legislation. We cannot wait any longer for action; the time is now,” said Rep. Somani.

The letter includes five solution-oriented recommendations for combating gun violence, including calls for research support, promoting gun violence awareness, enhancing law enforcement data sharing, and re-engaging legislative leaders on needed state law changes.

As part of its People First agenda, House Democrats have introduced several legislative solutions around promoting gun safety measures supported by a bipartisan majority of Ohioans including Rep. Somani’s and Rep. Thomas’ HB 217, as well as:

·       Keeping Our Survivors Safe Act (Reps. Grim, Munira)

·       Keep Every Home Safe Act (Rep. Brewer)

·       Commonsense Concealed Carry (Reps. Brown, Isaacsohn)

·       Universal Background Checks Act (Reps. Robinson, Isaacsohn)

·       Ohio Task Force on Gun Violence (Rep. Brewer)
