COLUMBUS – State Rep. Anita Somani (D-Dublin) today celebrated the passage of the bipartisan House Concurrent Resolution (HCR) 16 by the Ohio House of Representatives. This resolution recognizes the importance of perinatal mental health and has received bipartisan support.

“Over a lifetime of being an OB/GYN, I have seen the impact of mental health issues on pregnancy, postpartum and the family,” said Rep. Somani. “As a legislator, I see the importance of supporting resolutions like this that help bring awareness to how difficult it can be to access care and the need for better support to women during an incredibly vulnerable period of their lives.”

HCR 16 was also jointly sponsored by State Rep. Sharon Ray (R-Wadsworth).

“Perinatal stress, anxiety, and depression can adversely impact the physical and psychological health of women and their children during both pregnancy and the first year of motherhood. To give our children the best chance at life and opportunity to live up to their full potential, we must start with the health of the mother, including their mental health,” said Rep. Ray.

The perinatal period is defined as the time between the beginning of pregnancy until the child’s first birthday. It’s a time of rapid change, which can trigger new mental health struggles. More education and awareness about this issue is needed in order to ensure all new mothers receive the healthcare and support that they need.

HCR 16 will now head to the Ohio Senate for a concurrence vote then to the governor’s office.
