Rep. Somani Announces Franklin County Received $5,157,454 in Brownfield Remediation Awards
COLUMBUS — State Rep. Anita Somani (D-Dublin) today announced that Franklin County has received $5,157,454 through the Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program to help clean up and redevelop hazardous brownfield sites, creating new employment and development opportunities.
“Cleaning up environmentally hazardous sites will not only make the communities we live in safer and cleaner, but it will also open the door for more economic development. This project will be a wonderful addition to the Central Ohio area,” said Rep. Somani.
This project would remove hazardous materials, like asbestos and mold, from a former government building. The building will be renovated into an office space equipped with a gym and restaurant that would bring in 200 jobs.
Today’s announcement includes approximately $102.4M for 35 cleanup and remediation projects and roughly $4.5M for 26 assessment projects across 22 counties. Funds awarded will help assess and clean up industrial, commercial, and institutional brownfield sites that have been abandoned, idled, or underutilized due to a known or potential release of hazardous substances or petroleum.
The Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program is funded by the Ohio General Assembly as part of the current operating budget, which Rep. Somani supported.
