Senate Committee Begins Hearings on Bill to Address Rising Property Taxes
COLUMBUS—State Reps. Thomas Hall (R- Madison Twp.) and Adam Bird (R-New Richmond) today provided sponsor testimony on the Ohio Homeowners Relief Act during Senate Ways and Means Committee.
This legislation will protect vulnerable Ohioans by modifying the procedures used by the Tax Commissioner to conduct property tax sales assessment ratio studies, ultimately resulting in fair property valuations.
“This common-sense bill will protect vulnerable Ohioans from drastic increases in property taxes,” said Hall. “It is my responsibility to protect my constituents and I will continue paving the way on property tax reform.”
Specifically, the bill will require the Tax Commissioner to weigh the past three years of a county’s property values to determine property tax.
“The Ohio Homeowners Relief Act will provide some relief to Ohioans who have concerns about paying for their basic needs as a result of historic property valuation increases,” said Bird. “I look forward to additional hearings in the Senate as we work to provide much-needed relief to Ohioans.”
The Ohio Homeowners Relief Act came as a result of recent projections of steep property tax increases in 13 Ohio counties.
House Bill 187 will continue to receive hearings in the Senate Ways and Means Committee.
