State Representatives Adam Bird (R-New Richmond) and Kevin Ritter (R-Marietta) today announced that the Ohio House of Representatives passed House Bill 114 – legislation that works to establish consistent age requirements for kindergarten admission across Ohio.

“H.B. 114 brings common sense and consistency across the state for the kindergarten enrollment process,” said Bird.

“Current state law states that districts must choose August 1st or September 30th as the deadline by which an incoming kindergartener must be five years of age,” said Representative Ritter. “This dual standard has led to confusion and frustration especially for families moving from one district to another. I am pleased we were able to provide clarity on the issue.”

This legislation would require public schools to admit children into kindergarten if they turn five years old on or before September 30th of the upcoming school year.  This bill helps create uniformity across the state for kindergarten enrollment.

House Bill 114 now goes to the Senate for further consideration.
