State Representative Brian Lorenz (R-Powell) is highlighting Water Safety Week by encouraging Ohio families and communities to take proactive steps to prevent drownings, promote safe recreation, and educate children and adults about the importance of water awareness.

“As Ohioans begin spending more time at pools, lakes, rivers, and waterparks this summer, Water Safety Week serves as an important reminder that a few simple precautions can save lives,” said Lorenz. “Whether you are boating on Lake Erie, swimming at a local pool, or enjoying one of Ohio’s many waterways, safety must always come first.”

Lorenz emphasized that drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death among children nationwide and stressed the importance of education, supervision, and preparedness.

Key water safety reminders include:

  • Always supervise children near water, even for a moment
  • Ensure children and inexperienced swimmers wear properly fitted life jackets
  • Avoid distractions, including phone use, while supervising swimmers
  • Learn CPR and basic water rescue techniques
  • Never swim alone and always follow posted safety guidelines
  • Stay alert to weather and water conditions when boating or swimming outdoors

Lorenz also highlighted the importance of community partnerships that provide swim lessons, boating education, and emergency preparedness training throughout Ohio.

“Water safety is not just a personal responsibility — it is a community effort,” Lorenz added. “By educating families and promoting safe habits, we can help ensure every Ohioan enjoys a safe and memorable summer.”

Ohioans can learn more about water safety resources through local parks departments, the American Red Cross, and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
