Representatives Ray and Isaacsohn Introduce Bill to Address Frivolous Public Records Requests
COLUMBUS –State Representatives Sharon Ray (R-Wadsworth) and Dani Isaacsohn (D-Cincinnati) recently introduced legislation to remedy frivolous public records requests.
The bill will specifically restrict individuals from making public requests that are meant to harass and disrupt public officials and their offices. The bill will also equip public offices with a process if they believe to have received a harassing or disruptive request.
“My hope is that this legislation will strike the perfect balance between ensuring transparency and protecting public officials and their offices from unwarranted requests,” said Ray.
“Safeguarding the public’s right to access important information is crucial for a healthy democracy,” said Isaacsohn. “This legislation is a sensible way to ensure those records requests stay true to their purpose, without overloading public employees with unnecessary or frivolous demands.”
The legislation awaits a bill number and House committee assignment.
