Representative LaRe Provides Sponsor Testimony on Bill to Modernize Ohio Child Custody Law
COLUMBUS—State Representative Jeff LaRe (R-Violet Twp.) today provided sponsor testimony before the House Judiciary Committee on legislation to modernize child custody law for children born to unwed parents.
By providing legal clarity, House Bill 256 recognizes the importance of both parents in a child's life. Key provisions include:
- Ensures fathers who meet Ohio’s standard of an “established parent and child relationship” or whose names appear on their child’s birth certificate are granted equal rights and responsibilities in parenting their child;
- Places the responsibility of custody and parenting time on both the mother and father;
- Establishes protections if parents are unable to cooperate or exercise their rights and responsibilities as a parent;
- Ensures that full faith and credit shall be given to lawfully executed birth certificates in other states; and
- Limits parental rights for individuals convicted of rape or sexual battery.
“House Bill 256 ensures that both mothers and fathers have the opportunity to share in the responsibilities and joys of parenting,” said LaRe during sponsor testimony. “By emphasizing joint involvement, the bill promotes stability, continuity, and healthy relationships for children, which are proven to support emotional and social development.”
House Bill 256 awaits further consideration from the House Judiciary Committee.
