Representative David Thomas Supports Bill to Eliminate Quotas for Law Enforcement
COLUMBUS—State Representative David Thomas (R-Jefferson) is pleased to announce that the Ohio House of Representatives passed House Bill 131, bipartisan legislation to prohibit law enforcement agencies from using quotas for arrests and citations.
The measure aims to shift the culture in Ohio to prioritize the quality of police work over the quantity of tickets written, building positive relationships between community members and their law enforcement officers. Under current law, it is legal to mandate that an officer issue a certain number of tickets each day.
“It just makes sense,” said Thomas. “This is a consumer protection and as we are grateful to our first responders we also need to protect our taxpayers and residents against unnecessary fines and fees.”
The legislation received support from the law enforcement community and civil justice reform advocates.
House Bill 131 awaits consideration from the Ohio Senate.
