COLUMBUS- State Representative Bob Peterson (R-Sabina) today voted in support of legislation that will temporarily suspend Ohio’s state gas tax for 90 days, providing meaningful relief to Ohioans as fuel costs continue to rise.

Sub. House Bill 519 would take effect in October and provide Ohioans with an estimated $725 million in savings heading into the holiday season. Importantly, the temporary suspension will be structured to ensure state and local governments continue to have access to the resources needed for road maintenance and construction.

“Ohioans should not have to choose between filling up their tank and paying for the other necessities of everyday life,” said Rep. Peterson. “Whether you’re commuting to work, taking the kids to school or running a farm, higher fuel costs affect everyone. This temporary gas tax suspension puts money back in the pockets of Ohio families while keeping Ohio’s roads moving forward.”

This initiative is part of the Ohio House Republicans’ broader efforts to lower the cost of everyday life for Ohioans. Since the beginning of the General Assembly, House Republicans have championed legislation focused on delivering savings you can see, including cutting state income taxes with a new flat rate, passing a slate of bills providing more than $4 billion in property tax relief over the next three years, expanding access to publicly funded child care and preschool, and renewing the expanded summer sales tax holiday.

Sub. House Bill 519 now heads to Governor Mike DeWine for his signature.
