Rep. Terry Johnson Applauds House Passage of Bill Helping Veterans Receive Healthcare Benefits

COLUMBUS—During today’s session, the Ohio House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 10, legislation that requires the state’s Department of Medicaid to determine whether a person receiving medical assistance is eligible for federal military-related healthcare benefits. It then requires the department to notify that individual of his or her potential eligibility and assist them in reaching out to the appropriate entity to receive those benefits.

Following passage on the House floor, Rep. Terry Johnson, chairman of the House Armed Services, Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee, released the following statement:

After all that our brave military veterans have sacrificed for us, it is only appropriate that we give back in any way we can. Senate Bill 10 is just one among many ways that we can do that. By helping our veterans access the healthcare benefits that they have earned, we express our gratitude for their service and show them that, as a state, we are working to make sure they receive the treatment they need. I was proud to have supported this legislation from the outset and pleased to see it rightfully receive unanimous approval today on the House floor.

The bill now heads back to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
