State Representative Melanie Miller (R-Ashland) today voted in support of House Bill 292 – legislation to establish the Ohio Defense and Space Commission.

“We are taking a decisive step to strengthen Ohio’s role in national defense and advanced technology leadership. This commission will bring together business leaders, military partners, academic institutions, and state policymakers to better coordinate investment, attract defense missions, and grow high skill jobs across our communities,” said Miller. “By supporting small defense businesses and positioning our state to compete for federal resources, we are ensuring Ohio remains a leader in defense, aerospace, and cutting edge research.”

The bill establishes the Ohio Defense and Space Commission to consider strategies to promote the defense and aerospace industries in Ohio.  If enacted, the commission would be responsible for the following:

  • Administering the Defense and Aerospace Industries Expansion Program
  • Recruiting international businesses to invest in the state for defense and aerospace industry purposes
  • Promoting research, development, and manufacturing of technology to counter unmanned aerial vehicle systems in Ohio
  • Considering policies intended to improve quality of life for service members and veterans
  • Studying and developing comprehensive strategies to promote the defense and aerospace industries throughout the state

House Bill 292 now moves to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
