Pizzulli Announces Legislation to Designate John Rankin Day
COLUMBUS – State Rep. Justin Pizzulli (R-Scioto County) recently announced soon-to-be introduced legislation to designate February 4th as John Rankin Day. The bill will also commission the erecting of a statue of Rankin on Ohio statehouse grounds.
An early abolitionist, Rankin was a reverend and his house in Ripley, Ohio served as a central hub of the Underground Railroad. Between 1829 and 1865, over 2,000 enslaved people passed through his home on their journey to freedom.
“By recognizing John Rankin Day and erecting a statue in his honor, we can honor his legacy of bravery and compassion,” said Pizzulli. “Rankin stood up for what he believed in, against all odds, and will be remembered as one of Ohio’s greatest abolitionists.”
Pizzulli is sponsoring this legislation alongside State Rep. Tex Fischer (R-Boardman).
The legislation awaits a bill number and committee assignment.
