COLUMBUS—State Rep. D.J. Swearingen is pleased to announce that the Parents’ Bill of Rights, priority legislation for the 135th General Assembly, was signed into law today. Swearingen sponsored the bill alongside former State Rep. Sara Carruthers (R-Hamilton).

Under this legislation, schools will be required to inform parents of any mental, emotional, or physical health-related changes in their child. Schools will also be prohibited from encouraging students to hide these changes from their parents.

“I’m grateful to see the Parents’ Bill of Rights officially cross the finish line,” said Swearingen. “This critical legislation will ensure parents have a voice when it comes to the health and wellbeing of their children.”

The bill will also require school districts to adopt a religious release time policy.

The Parents’ Bill of Rights will take effect in 90 days.
