Ohio House Passes Rep. Williams Bill Strengthening Penalties for Violent Rape Offenders

COLUMBUS, OH – State Representative Josh Williams (R-Sylvania Twp.) today announced the Ohio House of Representatives passed House Bill 528, legislation to strengthen mandatory prison penalties for rape committed by force or threat of force.

House Bill 528 ensures that offenders convicted of rape involving force or the threat of force face a minimum mandatory prison sentence of at least seven years, while allowing courts to impose minimum terms ranging from seven to eleven years based on the circumstances of the offense. Under current law, rape is a first-degree felony carrying a range of potential prison terms.

"Violent sexual offenders who use force or threats to commit these heinous crimes deserve serious consequences," said Rep. Williams. "This legislation sends a clear message that Ohio stands with victims and will hold violent offenders accountable through meaningful prison sentences."

By increasing the minimum mandatory prison term, the legislation seeks to enhance public safety, support victims, and ensure punishment better reflects the severity of the crime.

The bill now advances to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
