Ohio House Passes Legislation to Update NIL Law
COLUMBUS – The Ohio House of Representatives today passed House Bill 660, legislation to update Ohio’s Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) law, announced bill sponsor, State Rep. Jay Edwards (R-Nelsonville). Edwards is sponsoring the legislation alongside State Rep. Adam Mathews (R-Lebanon).
This legislation aims to ensure student athletes receive the compensation they deserve by allowing universities to officially collaborate in the process of paying student athletes, bridging the gap between the NIL Collective and state institutions.
“This was a monumental step forward, empowering athletes to earn compensation for their hard work, dedication and talent while representing our state’s institutions on the field, court, or arena,” said Edwards.
In November, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed an Executive Order allowing institutions to directly pay student-athletes. This legislation will codify the order into Ohio law.
House Bill 660 now moves to the Ohio Senate for consideration.
