Edwards Stands Up for Retired Public Employees
COLUMBUS – State Representative Jay Edwards is speaking out against potential cost-of-living freezes for thousands of retired public employees.
“These retirees made a commitment to their communities and served the public,” Edwards said. “Now, it’s time for their retirement system to remain committed to them when that support is needed most.”
Recent proposals at the Ohio Statehouse would block cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) for retirees in the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).
Edwards (R-Nelsonville) said the issue is especially concerning given the prospect of inflation, which is driving up costs for retirees.
“My message to OPERS is this: Prove it. If you’re going to propose COLA freezes on retirees, show your work. Promises are promises,” Edwards said.
While the push to impose those COLA freezes has slowed, Edwards urged retirees to continue making their voice heard, and invited them to contact his office.
“I’ve talked with many retirees who have serious, legitimate concerns. They are on fixed incomes. They don’t know what the future holds. They deserve to have their voice heard, and I intend to make sure it is,” concluded Edwards.
