COLUMBUS- The Ohio House of Representatives approved a state budget this evening that rewards the rich, while continuing to hurt our schools and communities, and denies Medicaid expansion to hundreds of thousands of working poor Ohioans. Following the vote, State Rep. Matt Lundy (D-Elyria) issued the following statement:

 On education:

“This plan fails to address the importance of constitutional funding for our schools, which will result in higher property taxes at the local level in Lorain County.

“The governor and the majority continue their push to privatize public education instead of improving public education.”

 On taxes:

“We should be investing in our schools and communities, instead of providing yet another tax break that will favor the wealthy.”

On healthcare:

“This is a once in a life time opportunity to help 275,000 Ohioans and grow healthcare jobs in our communities at places like EMH and Mercy. These are our tax dollars that will go to other states instead of being invested in the people of Lorain County and Ohio.

“Sadly, the majority is putting politics ahead of people. And some wonder why public servants are called politicians?

“It is important that we continue to work together to produce better results before we finish this budget in June. When the majority is being driven by extreme ideology, it’s difficult to find middle-ground, where solutions are found.

“We must keep trying to work together, because the priorities in this budget today are not putting our middle-class families first.”
