Reps. Cockley and Lett Introduce Legislation Regarding Data Center Water Consumption, Nondisclosure Agreements
COLUMBUS — State Reps. Christine Cockley (D-Columbus) and Crystal Lett (D-Columbus) Friday introduced legislation that would require data centers to report monthly and yearly water consumption and to prohibit data centers from including water consumption information in nondisclosure agreements with political subdivisions.
“Transparency around data centers water usage is essential in making informed decisions,” said Rep. Cockley. “This legislation gives us the tools to measure consistently and honestly.”
“My constituents have made it clear: if data centers are coming into our communities, they must be good neighbors. This legislation sets a firm foundation to ensure communities and developers fully understand the real impacts of these facilities. I support innovation and economic growth, but it will not come at the expense of transparency and accountability to the public,” said Rep. Lett.
Data centers are water intensive and can strain infrastructure. Ohio has over 200 data centers, and even mid-sized operations’ daily water consumption can be that of a small town’s. As of now, there are no statewide reporting requirements for water consumption.
The bill now awaits a number and referral to a House Committee for further consideration.
