COLUMBUS—State Rep. Lisa Sobecki (D-Toledo) today issued a statement urging the Unemployment Compensation Modernization and Improvement Council (UCMIC) to continue to convene regularly in order to fix Ohio’s broken unemployment system. Currently, the UCMIC is not scheduled to meet again until Feb. 24, 2022, with additional meetings on May 19, 2022 and Sept. 15, 2022.

“The Unemployment Council still has work to do, and it must continue to meet regularly until all the issues with Ohio’s broken unemployment system are addressed,” said Rep. Sobecki. “Numerous audits have revealed serious issues that are still outstanding, and the implementation of an updated unemployment computer system will need to be carefully overseen by the legislature to ensure it effectively meets the needs of Ohioans.”

During the council meeting, Rep. Sobecki outlined a memo with several recommendations that the Council should implement moving forward, including:

·         Convening the Council monthly;

·         Providing the opportunity for the public to give in-person testimony;

·         Requesting Deloitte provide testimony to the Council after they received state contracts worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to build a Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) system that was riddled with errors and fraud.
