Rep. Boggs's bill to establish domestic violence fatality review boards statewide passes Ohio House

This bill will create a comprehensive process of reviewing domestic violence homicides in Ohio through a lens of prevention and accountability.

State Rep. Kristin Boggs (D-Columbus) today announced the Ohio House passage of House Bill (HB) 254, which would create a pathway for counties and regions to establish domestic violence fatality review boards that are tailored to meet each county and region’s needs in order to prevent further domestic violence fatalities.

“After seeing the recently released domestic violence fatality data collected from the past year, it is critical now more than ever that we have legislative action to create better protections for survivors of domestic violence. With the House passage of HB 254, we are indicating that our priorities continue to be the safety and well-being of all Ohioans,” said Rep. Boggs.

This legislation would:

Promote continued communication between all groups, professions, agencies, or entities engaged in the prevention and education of domestic violence.
Maintain databases of the domestic violence fatalities to understand the causes and incidence of those deaths.
Develop plans for implementing local service and program changes to the groups, professions, agencies, or entities that serve local residents that might prevent deaths by domestic violence
Provide the Department of Health with aggregate data, trends, and patterns concerning domestic violence fatalities.

The bill now moves to the Ohio Senate for further hearings.
