House Democrats Congratulate Galonski on Next Chapter
COLUMBUS– House Minority Leader Allison Russo (D-Upper Arlington) today congratulated former House Assistant Minority Whip Tavia Galonski (D-Akron) on being appointed as the Summit County clerk of courts. Rep. Galonski resigned tonight from the Ohio House of Representatives after serving in House Democratic Leadership as assistant whip since 2021 and as state representative since initially being appointed in May of 2017.
“Rep. Galonski has been a strong and steadfast voice of economic and social justice for all Ohioans during her time in the legislature,” said Leader Russo. “In her committee and House leadership positions, she maintained high standards and had a reputation for her candor and action-focused results. It is bittersweet to say goodbye, but it is reassuring that the people of Summit County have hired one of the best public servants to come out of the Ohio legislature.”
Prior to her Ohio House service, Galonski served as magistrate for the Summit County Court of Common Pleas, in both the domestic relations court and the juvenile court. She received her juris doctor from the University of Akron School of Law and was a Teamsters union member while working as a flight attendant for a major airline.
“It has been an honor to serve the people of the 33rd Ohio House District,” said Galonski. “I am resigning, but I will continue to serve the public as the Summit County clerk of courts— where I will always work to put people first.”
Galonski officially resigned her House leadership post Jan. 3, shortly before entering the official screening process for the appointment to fill former Summit County Clerk Sandra Kurt’s position after Kurt was elected clerk of the Akron Municipal Court.
In the coming days, House Democrats will announce the process for filling the House District 33 vacancy. It is expected that House Democrats will also name a new assistant whip in the coming weeks.
