State Rep. Stephanie Howse (D-Cleveland) yesterday joined legislators across the Midwest for the first meeting of the Forum on Social Justice’s Steering Committee. The purpose of the new nonpartisan forum is to provide legislators with opportunities to discuss and address a wide range of racial and social justice issues, including economic equity, systemic racism, discrimination, racial disparities in public health, education, corrections, police reform, voting rights, and more.

“Currently, Ohioans are facing injustices caused by unequal education, unsafe work conditions, inadequate health care services, subpar housing, and an unjust criminal justice system. These injustices have emerged as a result of policies that are rooted in a belief that certain people and communities are unworthy of the American Dream. It is time that elected officials on both sides of the aisle acknowledge that racism impacts all members of our society. It must be met with action from all levels of government. I am honored to be a member of this Committee and to help change these injustices,” said Rep. Howse

Members of the committee will be charged with gathering information on state and provincial efforts to address social justice issues, identifying “best practices,” and developing recommendations for consideration. The forum will also seek to provide professional development training opportunities for Midwestern legislators on topics such as implicit bias, how to talk about race, and strategies for bridging racial divides.
