Rep. Galonski issues statement commemorating 100 years of women's suffrage
COLUMBUS— State Rep. Tavia Galonski (D-Akron), chair of the Ohio House Democratic Women’s Caucus, today issued a statement commemorating 100 years of women’s suffrage.
“Today marks 100 years since the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which stated that women had the right to vote. Like all difficult roads, the vote for women came after a difficult gestation and in the end, the birth was not perfect.
Black women would wait several decades before winning full equality in the vote. As we marched toward a ‘more perfect union,’ some women were actually already used to voting in states such as New Jersey. Many male allies toiled on the road as well. All of those who fought for suffrage chose bravery over silence and truth over lies.
Today, some Ohioans still face barriers when it comes to achieving the Ohio Promise of equality for all. As Dr. Martin Luther King said, ‘injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’ I thereby encourage all Ohioans to soldier the courage of the suffragists, to unify toward a resolution on the pandemic and racial injustice, and to fight for the dignity of work for all,” Galonski said.
Galonski represents Ohio’s 35th district, which is comprised of parts of Akron and Barberton.
