Today, House Minority Leader Emilia Strong Sykes (D-Akron) celebrated Ohio’s Statehood Day today in honor of its 218th birthday. On March 1, 1803, Ohio’s General Assembly met for the first time in Chillicothe to take up the state’s business.

“I am extremely proud to call myself an Ohioan and to represent all of the hardworking residents of this great state,” said Leader Sykes. “To celebrate Ohio’s birthday, this year I pledge to move our state forward by carrying out the Ohio Promise of working for each and every one of my constituents.”

Every year on March 1, the anniversary of Ohio becoming the 17th state in the union, people throughout Ohio come together to celebrate its rich history and numerous achievements.
