Central Ohio House Democratic lawmakers, including Assistant Minority Leader Kristin Boggs (D-Columbus), Assistant Minority Whip Rep. Richard Brown (D-Canal Winchester), Reps. Mary Lightbody (D-Westerville), Beth Liston (D-Dublin), and Allison Russo (D-Upper Arlington), today issued a statement following protests in downtown Columbus Thursday night.

“Last night’s events did not start last night.

“We must recognize the institutional racism in our society and the trauma it continues to cause in our community. We must acknowledge that Black Americans continue to face brutality, fear and injustice every day.

“The hope is that protests will help bring about positive change, that protestors will feel heard and seen.

“Less than two weeks ago, those protesting the Stay at Home Orders stood outside the Statehouse, armed, and pounded on the windows of the Statehouse. Their protest was not disrupted. They were not gassed. Last night, the treatment was different. The disparate treatment Black Americans face is everywhere, even when they gather in protest.

“We understand the frustration and unease felt by our downtown small business owners following last night’s events. We stand with them as they pick up the pieces and repair shattered storefronts. We also stand with those who protested in peace last night over continued brutality and racism—we stand with you in your fight for justice and equality.”
