Richardson Presents State Flag to Glacier Ridge Elementary School

Tracy M. Richardson News

COLUMBUS – State Representative Tracy Richardson (R-Marysville) presented students and staff from Glacier Ridge Elementary School with an Ohio State Flag Tuesday.

Richardson presented the flag and explained the history and symbols of the flag to Mrs. Kate Thiry’s second grade class at the school. The students were polite and attentively listened to the Representative.

Richardson also met with Glacier Ridge Principal Pete Kurty and was assisted by Head Custodian Jon Preston.

“I was invited to teach the children about our state and our state flag,” said Richardson. “It was a wonderful opportunity to explain to the children what I do as a state legislator. I was also thoroughly impressed with the knowledge that the students already possessed about our state flag and credit Glacier Ridge Elementary on educating our children about important civic issues.”

The Ohio state flag was adopted in 1902 with the passage of House Bill 213 by Representative William S. McKinnon.  The style of the flag is known as a burgee and is the only state flag in the United States that is not rectangular in shape.

The blue triangle of the flag represents the hills and valleys of Ohio, while the stipes represent the states roads and waterways. The white circle with the red center is for the “O” of Ohio. The flag has 17 stars- 13 represent the 13 original states and the four additional stars represent Ohio’s designation as the 17th state in the United States.

The flag Richardson presented was flown over the Ohio Statehouse and will now fly over Glacier Ridge Elementary School.
