COLUMBUS –State Representative Tracy Richardson (R-Marysville) today presented House Resolution 224, legislation that commemorates April 2022 as the Month of the Military Child.

On April 25, 1968, U.S. Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger designated April as the Month of the Military Child in efforts to increase public knowledge and understanding of the issues surrounding children who have a parent in the military.

“The Month of the Military Child honors families, especially their children, who may move many times throughout their lives, bear the burden of a parent being in harm’s way and endure long separations from their parent,” Richardson said. “We recognize that military children make unique sacrifices for our freedoms. It is Ohio’s desire to support and empathize with the challenge of moving from school to school and to encourage others to do the same.”

House Resolution 224 ensures that enormous personal costs so frequently exacted with the fulfillment of service-related obligations do not go unnoticed.

Richardson presented the resolution to Pete LuPiba, Ohio’s Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commissioner, at Olentangy Heritage Elementary School. Students, staff, and military families were invited to participate in the resolution presentation.

Heritage Elementary is a Purple Star School, which is a program designed to help schools respond to the educational, social and emotional challenges military-connected children face during their transition to a new school in preparation for college, workforce and life.

Representative Richardson was joined by Minority Leader Russo, joint sponsor of House Resolution 224.
